Casa Batlló

At number 43 on Paseo de Gracia stands the iconic Casa Batlló, a route that once linked the city to the neighborhood of Villa de Gracia, which is now an integral part of Barcelona.

Since 1860, when an ambitious urban plan (known as the Cerdà Plan) was adopted in Barcelona, Paseo de Gracia has become the backbone of the city, and the city’s most significant families have begun to settle here. In this way, the street transitioned from a promenade for walkers and horse-drawn carriages in the 19th century to a major thoroughfare for automobiles in the 20th.

In 1877, when there was still no electric light in Barcelona, the building was constructed by Emilio Sala Cortés (one of Gaud’s architectural instructors). In 1903, it was purchased by Mr. Josep Batlló y Casanovas, a wealthy businessman and a major industrialist in the Barcelona textile industry.

Mr Josep Batlló gave Antoni Gaud complete rein to do anything he wanted with the project, which had originally called for demolition. The mansion was saved from destruction and completely renovated between 1904 and 1906 due to Gaud’s boldness. The architect rearranged the inside walls, enlarged the lightwell, and transformed the space into a masterpiece, all while keeping the outside same. In addition to its aesthetic worth, the structure is highly practical, which is more indicative of the present day than of the past. Some people even claim to have spotted precursors to 21st-century design trends.

At the same time that Casa Batlló was being renovated, other notable architects were updating their own homes to compete for urban honors organized by the Barcelona City Council. After the 1950s, the Batlló family no longer had any vested interest in Casa Batlló. The building has changed hands many times over the years, but the current owners, the Bernat family, have had it since the 1990s and have done extensive restoration work.

In 1995, the family decided to share their home with the world by making it available for events and tours. Since 2002, when the International Year of Gaud was celebrated, cultural tours of Casa Batlló have also been available. Both can be done now, and both the supply and the content are evolving all the time.

Today, Casa Batlló is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Barcelona landmark, a must-see for anybody interested in learning about Gaud and the modernist movement. One million people visit each year, making it one of the most popular cultural and tourism destinations.
